Cape Town, mountain shadow and sea rail.

Table Mountain throws an afternoon shadow across the whole City Bowl — the rare city where the shade forecast is geological. Three picks either side of the mountain.

By

Cape Town’s shade calendar is written by Table Mountain: from mid-afternoon the City Bowl slides progressively into mountain shadow, earliest at the Gardens end, latest at the foreshore. Stay Cool models the mountain like a very large building — which, for shadow purposes, it is.

These picks pair the Bowl’s shadow schedule with the Sea Point promenade’s milkwood clusters and the Company’s Garden’s 350-year-old canopy — the oldest planted shade in the southern hemisphere.
