The Grove, under the banyans.

Coconut Grove is Miami’s oldest neighborhood and its most forested — banyan, poinciana, and gumbo-limbo closing over entire streets. Three picks in the hardwood shade.

By

Coconut Grove sits on the Miami Rock Ridge under a remnant hardwood hammock — the banyans on Main Highway are among the largest in the continental US, and the side streets off McFarlane hold near-total canopy. It is reliably 5 to 7 degrees cooler than Brickell, three miles north.

These picks run the hammock streets and the bayfront parks. The Barnacle’s forest path is the deepest shade in the city limits.
