The Gaslamp, under the awnings.

San Diego’s Victorian quarter kept its awnings when everyone else tore theirs down. Three picks through the Gaslamp’s covered sidewalks and East Village’s new shade structures.

By

The Gaslamp Quarter’s 16 blocks of Victorian commercial buildings retain their original awning lines — and the restaurants have doubled down with patio canopies that functionally roof the sidewalk on Fifth Avenue. Even in the marine-layer-free afternoons of September, the west side of Fifth stays walkable.

East Village adds the new Makers Quarter shade structures and the ballpark’s concourse shadow. These three stitch both together.
