Commercial Drive, in the maple shade.

Vancouver’s east side has the canopy the west coast forgets it built. Three picks under the big-leaf maples for the long summer evenings.

By

Commercial Drive isn’t Vancouver’s prettiest commercial street, but the big-leaf maples on the cross streets and the awning canopy over the patios make it the city’s most reliably shaded east-of-Main walk. From Venables to East 1st, the canopy is continuous; only the Drive itself catches direct sun, and even that flips to shaded sidewalk by 4 PM.

These picks pair the Drive with the Trout Lake park canopy and the residential maple streets to the east.
