Fern Dell, all summer.

Fern Dell is Griffith Park’s coolest microclimate — old-growth coast live oak and sycamore over a spring-fed creek bed. Three walks that use it as a cool entrance and exit point.

By

Fern Dell sits at the southwest base of Griffith Park, in a narrow canyon shaded by coast live oak and the planted ferns that give the area its name. The combination of canopy + spring-fed creek + canyon walls drops temperatures 8 to 10 degrees vs the Los Feliz blocks 200 meters south. It is the coolest accessible walking destination in central LA.

These three pair the Dell with the upper Griffith Park trails. We avoid the open-meadow upper sections in summer — full sun, no shade. The Dell, the Observatory’s east approach, and Bronson Canyon are the picks.
